Save the date: A Europe-wide conference on the need for international human rights instruments for older people

Strengthening the Rights of Older People Worldwide. International Conference, Osnabrück (Germany),  December 5-7, 2012

At international level, a discussion about the need for new human rights instruments for the protection of older people has begun. In the developing world the number of older people will grow rapidly in the coming decades. Their situation is characterized by age discrimination and human rights violations.

In the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations and 10 years after the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing the conference will explore the adequacy of the existing international human rights framework in protecting the rights of older people across the globe.

Join us for a high-level conference to generate a better understanding of the human rights issues facing older people globally and the role of European Union member states in achieving a global standard that protects the rights of all older people.

Invited speakers:

  • Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
  • Vladimir Spidla, Czech politician, President of Czech social democratic think tank Masaryk Democratic Academy, former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, former EU Commissioner
  • Thomas Hammarberg, former Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights
  • Henning Scherf, Germany- former Mayor of Bremen and patron of HelpAge Germany
